FAQ

What is Kumihimo Braiding?

Kumihimo cord braiding is an ancient Japanese art which was used as a means to wrap a kimono at the waist as a sash cord (Obi-jime) and as an element in sword decoration. It has been adapted to many different functions. One of these is to create decorative cords for jewelry and clothing other than the kimono. I have found it very soothing to use my braiding stand.

I use both fiber and beads to create different kinds of braids. There are endless variations; I suspect I have just seen the tip of the iceberg in my explorations of this art.

What is Bead Embroidery?

Today's incredibly diverse array of Japanese and Czech glass beads has given artists the world over a medium amenable to embroidery stitches of all kinds. One of these is the Peyote stitch, which allows for off-loom "bead-weaving". There are many kinds, and I am still learning them. "Spiral Rope", and free-form or net Peyote are other versions I frequently use.

What is "Micro-Macramé?

Micro-macramé differs from regular macramé only in that the thickness of the threads is much finer than regular macramé.

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

I include this question, because cranial osteopathy is the other "half" of what I do in the world. Osteopaths are fully trained and licensed physicians: I have delivered babies, admitted patients to the hospital and cared for them, and as a family practitioner have seen patients in my office for many years. Most recently I primarily do Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. This is a hands-on approach to healing which has many different forms. I use the cranial approach, which focuses on the interface between the body's fluids and tissues, in order to normalize balance and synchronization. This then improves circulation, healing, and the body's internal pain relief; at the same time it helps to reduce inflammation, stagnation, and dysfunction of body systems.

The most beautiful gift I have received from combining my art and my Osteopathic training, is to see the continuity of love, spirit, and beauty in our magnificently made bodies, and in the natural world around us.
